Shanxi has produced many brilliant and talented figures. Emperors and empress includes Yan Di and Huang Di (the earliest sovereign of the Chinese nation), Yao, Shun and Yu, (believed to be moral and benevolent rulers in early Chinese history), Chong’er (also known as King Wen of the Jin Kingdom), and Wu Zetian in Tang Dynasty. Famous generals includes Wei Qing and Huo Qubin in the Han Dynasty (202BC-220AD), Guanyu, China’s Martial God in the Three Kingdom Period (220-280AD), Mu Guiying, a heroine in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127AD), and Xue Rengui in the Tang Dynasty. Politicians include Lianpo and Lin Xiangru in the Warring States Period (476-221BC), Kou Zhun in the Northern Song Dynasty, Di Renjie in the Tang Dynasty, Yu Chenglong in the Qing Dynasty (1617-1684AD). Xun Kuang of the Warring States Period is one of the representatives of Confucianism. The litterateurs of Tang Dynasty, like Sima Guang, Wang Bo, Wang Wei, Wang Zhihuan, Wang Changling and Bai Juyi left plenty of classics read by generations of Chinese people. Works of Guan Hanqin, Zheng Guangzu and Bai Pu, great playwrights of Yuan Qu –a type of verse popular in the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1370AD), and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms written by Luo Guanzhong have been gaining popularity for centuries. Revolutionaries and martyrs from this land have striven to fight for Chinese people’s liberation .
